Two Projection Workshops Coming Soon
FIAF and the Association of European Cinematheques join forces again to offer two projection workshops at ACE member cinematheques this Spring.
The Swedish Film Institute is organizing a 4-day projection workshop intended to strengthen the capability to project photochemical film in the Nordic countries (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden) and Estonia.
Fifteen projectionists hailing from a variety of independent venues, festivals, museums and cinematheques have confirmed their participation at this event, which will take place at the end of May at the beautiful Film House/Filmhuset in Stockholm. This venue, which is home to the Swedish Film Institute, is equipped with a Philips DP70 for 35mm and 70mm film, a Kinoton FP-38E for 35mm and 16mm film, as well as a Kinoton FP18 for 16mm film.
An online distance learning program, which will precede the workshop, will provide a theoretical understanding of a variety of topics related to analog film and its theatrical presentation (film formats, sound systems, projector mechanisms, etc).
Over the course of the workshop, participants will receive hands-on 35mm projection training, which includes handling analog film prints, threading a projector, performing change-overs, and more.
Imagine a venue filled with projectors on all sides… Two weeks later, another workshop in collaboration with the Swiss Cinematheque will take place at Lichtspiel / Cinémathèque de Berne, an incredible location dedicated to analog film in the capital of Switzerland. The two-day program will focus on the inspection of film prints and equipment care and maintenance, including the exciting but tricky (or rather: tricky but exciting) question of restarting projection equipment that hasn’t been used for a long period of time.
As the announcement points out, many films are and will remain undigitized, and maintaining projection equipment and know-how is of utmost importance to be able to continue providing the experience of film projection to future audiences.
